Power Ring System Performance ThecombinationoflowestavailableTrise,ESRandESL coupledwithhighestripplecurrenthandlingcapability enablethedevelopmentofindustryleadinginverter designswithunbeatableperformanceandreliability. Lowest available Trise for a given ripple current Lowest available ESL, less than 5nH demonstrated with optimal integrated bus Lowest available ESR, less than 150 micro-Ohms typical Crownterminalarchitectureprovidesforamultitude ofcurrentpathswhichallowsthemonolithiccapacitor tofunctionasadistributedelementwithamuchlower ESRthananequivalentarrayofsmallerparts.SBEhas developedanextgenerationcapacitorsimulationtool thatallowsaccuratecalculationofhotspottempera- turetoallowoptimalratingwithexcellentreliability. Integrating the Power Ring in an Existing Design The“stacked”inverterdesignevolvesfrommodifying atypicalautomotiveinverterbyutilizingtheexcess spaceleftabovetheIGBTmodule(figure1).Bybend- ingtheendofthelaminarbusplate, theIBGT,die, coolingplate, andtheringcapacitorare“stacked”on topofeachotherinasymmetricalfashion.Thering capacitor is placed underneath the cooling plate. ThecoolingplateissharedwiththeIGBTmodule whichismountedonthetop. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure2showsthe“stacked”inverterdesignafterthe integrationoftheringcapacitorandthelaminarbus plate.Bynowcombiningbothaspectsofverticalinte- grationandthelowtemperaturerisecharacteristics ofthecapacitors,anincreaseto50%ormorevolume reductionisrealisticallypossible.Theseimprovements clearlytranslateintoweightandcostreductions. |
